Concurrent Sessions I: Benefits of Engaging in a Mentoring Relationship. Paying It Forward through Mentoring

Prof Low Ee Ling

Teacher educators may be more traditionally seen as mentors of pre-service teachers. Yet, they themselves also need to be mentored through academic mentorship and faculty development in order to be continuing contributors to the fraternity and ultimately society. As a collaborative relationship that encompasses a broad range of activities, academic mentorship and faculty development create an environment where more experienced faculty members can provide a junior member with professional guidance and structured growth. This talk focuses on how academic mentorship and faculty development goes beyond the 2-person mentor–mentee relationship to a whole-community network. It illustrates through my own professional journey, significant mentors in my career and uses the case study of the practices of mentoring faculty at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University. With an articulated framework known as “Building the Archetype of a Future-Ready Faculty”, I will share our approach in mentoring faculty 4 life i.e. lifelong, life-wide, life-wise and life-deep and how we are invested in holistic faculty development from recruitment to retirement.
